Based on this article in the NYT.
“Attacks at Christian places of worship have prompted no response from the man elected to represent and to protect all of India’s citizens. Nor has he addressed the mass conversion to Hinduism of Christians and Muslims who have been coerced or promised money. Mr. Modi’s continued silence before such troubling intolerance increasingly gives the impression that he either cannot or does not wish to control the fringe elements of the Hindu nationalist right.”
The very beginning of this article is disturbing. But something that I had said before in my NaMo post as soon as he was elected. Modi will stay silent. Because his party, the BJP, is the political extension of the RSS, the Hindu nationalist party. There will be more attacks; there will be more mass conversions; there will be more horrendous lynchings like the ones in eastern India recently. Because with the BJP in control of much of the local, state, and federal levels — with enough votes to not have a coalition — there will be a huge, and I mean huge, uptick in religious violence.
The fact that these right wing Hindu groups are getting more and more involved with their “conversion” practices, is a huge sign of worry. For the “most democratic country in the world” — which I say with truckloads of salt — secularism has to stay a major pillar in its government. I hate to say I told you so, but ….. I told you so. India, you’re going to see the violence from the 70s and 80s, and I hope that it will not escalate to the violence in ’47 after the partition. But, the power of determining that rests in one politician’s hands. And I think it’s safe to say that his hands are tied.
