Reblog: Straw feminism

Remember the movie “Ten Things I Hate About You”? Typical straw-feminism there.

Behind the Curtain

This is the sixth installment of the Feminist Frequency video series focused around common tropes of women perpetuated in the media. I recently posted the video on the  ‘Manic Pixie Dream Girl’ yet I feel this video to be the strongest and most interesting of the series.

Anita Sarkeesian  identifies the trope of The Straw Feminist as an artifiical caricature of a ‘feminist’ created to exaggerate myths and stereotypes that undermine feminist thought.

“The Straw Feminist is set up to perpetuate and advance the myth that feminism is no longer needed, that we’ve arrived at gender equality and anyone who disagrees is quickly demeaned and portrayed as an extremist. “
